| The history
of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has spanned several centuries
since its creation in the late 1700s. Prior to the initiation of Massachusetts
into the United States and English colonization of the area, it was inhabited
by various indigenous tribes. The state has no singular characteristic,
geographic or cultural, that helps to distinguish it from the surrounding
areas. This article discusses the history of the people who inhabited the
land that eventually became the modern Commonwealth, which is intertwined
with the histories of the neighboring states and what would become the
nation of the United States of America.
I shall enter on no encomium upon Massachusetts; she needs none. There she is. Behold her, and judge for yourselves. There is her history; the world knows it by heart. The past, at least, is secure. There is Boston and Concord and Lexington and Bunker Hill; and there they will remain forever. |
